Social project to raise awareness about the poor in Singapore

Channel NewsAsia, 12 Oct 2013

A social project is underway to raise awareness about the poor in Singapore.

Called Singaporeans Against Poverty, its purpose is to highlight that amid the relative affluence in the society, there are those who struggle to support themselves and their families.

Organised by Caritas Singapore, a Catholic social action body, the project is expected to span three to five years.

In a statement on Saturday, Caritas' Advocacy Committee Chairman Laurence Lien said, "We want to set everyone thinking about the poor in Singapore. Who are they? Why are they in such a plight? How do they survive?"

"We want to start a conversation. We invite everyone to move out of their comfort zones to join in this conversation," added Mr Lien, who is also a Nominated Member of Parliament.

The project will unfold in different forms and through different channels, including an online game on poverty that is to be launched later this month.

Stories on the plight, courage and resilience of the poor in Singapore will also be told on websites, social media platforms, the radio and other media channels.

A micro-site, www.sgagainstpoverty.org, has also been set up to provide information on the subject.
